Let's talk about being healthy...
       It isn't easy being healthy, our bodies are designed to eat food whenever we see it because thousands of years ago, food wasn't always readily available. This programmed our bodies to eat as much as possible when food was available so that we didn't starve and die. From a physiological perspective our bodies main goals are to survive and reproduce.
      Well...some things have changed over the last 10,000 years. For instance, food is available everywhere you look. When you drive home from work, you probably pass at least 10 different fast food restaurants. Even if you reign victorious, the battle isn't over though. After a long day of work, you sit down ready to watch your favorite show and on the first commercial you see a delicious pizza covered in mouth watering meats and cheese. What are you supposed to do in this situation? You have been working all day long, resisting every temptation you see. Plus, you are tired and worn out, so you go ahead and order the pizza. You can't wait to sink your teeth into this pie, it is going to be delicious. Excitement and expectations rush through your body sending you through a high like no other. The pizza comes and in minutes you devour the whole pie.  The worst part is that you barely moved to get the pizza. You don't have to walk or even drive to get your food, it will get delivered for you. In the past, you would have at least walked to a restaurant. Nowadays, most of the walking is from the couch to the door back to the couch.

Does this scenario sound familiar?

To me it does, I have done it multiple times. In today's world it is hard to escape calorie dense food that makes our mouths water. Everywhere we go, we are persuaded to eat delicious sugary, fatty food. However, this is not an excuse or a reason to give in. We have to be strong in these moments and be able to realize what is best for us. When it comes to your health sometimes you have to be selfish and remind your friends and family your goals. They are there to support you and if they aren't then get rid of them; not in general, but when it comes down to eating. The best way to improve your eating habit is to improve your environment. You have to set up an environment that will allow you to succeed, one that doesn't put you in a situation to fail. The first thing you need to do is tell everyone your goals and build yourself a support group. Make everyone aware that you are on a mission to change your behavior. Once, the support group is established, stop putting yourself in bad environments. If you know certain things trigger you to eat unhealthy food, then, avoid them! In the beginning, it will be hard and probably a struggle. You can't lose faith in yourself, if you begin to question yourself , ask your support group for help. Be honest with yourself and others. Their is no sense in lying to yourself to make you feel happy for a day, in the end you will be more upset with yourself. Keeping a journal can help you understand certain tendencies and patterns. You can do this by writing down what you eat and how you feel. This will you allow you to see how the food is affecting your mood and behavior. Since last week, I have been writing in my journal every day and I have discovered patterns. For example, when I drink coffee past two, I sleep terrible that night. My body does not do well with too much caffeine. In addition, by writing in my journal I can see how certain food affects my mood. Sometimes eating unhealthy food with a good friend can be the best thing for your body at that time. This past summer, I would go to Five Guys (best burger joint ever!) with one of my good friends. I would not consider it to be healthy, nothing I ate there was good for my body, but it was exactly what my mind needed. Strict dieting can take a toll on the mind, it has to be fun and enjoyable for it to work. Having that cheat meal with a friend every so often can be the reason why a diet is so successful. You have to be careful when dieting,  you can't let it take over your life. Your diet should help you become the best version of yourself. If your diet is ruining some of your relationships, then obviously that diet isn't the right one for you. 

Last but not least, you need to start exercising on a regular basis. By exercising frequently it will help build your self-esteem and willpower, you will even become more disciplined in other areas of your life. By exercising everyday you are proving to yourself that you can stick to something. You start feeling better, becoming more in touch with your body. It sounds crazy, but when you exercise, you just don't want to put garbage into your body. Most careless eating is due to your mood, and being bored. Exercise helps fight this by increasing your mood and your creativity. Remember, exercise doesn't have to be long, it can be as little as five minutes. The main goal is to get moving every

So here's a quick breakdown.. 

  1. Today's world is loaded with temptations, food is available 24/7
  2. You have to be strong, have will power and resist these temptations
  3. You need a good support group
  4. You have to be honest with yourself and others
  5. Write it in a journal daily
  6. If you are going to have a cheat meal, make sure you have it with your loved ones
  7. Exercise every single day ( even 5 minutes counts! )
  8. Aim to be in bed before 11, sleeping for 7 to 9 hours.
